City of Coimbra

  Coimbra is located in central Portugal, boasting a rich history as the country’s former capital. Right next to the charming river Mondego, the city is best known for the prestigious University of Coimbra, a baroque masterpiece, alongside its well-preserved medieval old town, where it’s easy to find many heritage monuments dating back several centuries. Combined with the delicious regional gastronomy and cultural entertainment for all tastes, Coimbra’s past and present blend aesthetically, offering a captivating Portuguese experience!

 

Travel to Coimbra

Arriving by plane to Porto: The Porto Airport – OPO is distanced about 120 km from Coimbra. From there, you can take the Coimbra Airport Shuttle or the FlixBus services, both travelling directly to Coimbra. In alternative, you can take the Metro do Porto to get to the Campanhã train station, which has multiple daily train connections to Coimbra (travel time between 1h30m and 2h30m depending on the type of train).

Arriving by plane to Lisbon: The Lisbon Airport – LIS is distanced about 200 km from Coimbra. From there, you can take the Coimbra Airport Shuttle or the FlixBus services, both travelling directly to Coimbra. In alternative, you can take the Metro de Lisboa to get to the Oriente train station, which has multiple daily train connections to Coimbra (travel time between 2h and 2h30m depending on the type of train).

Arriving by train to Coimbra: The city’s railway station is called Coimbra-B (or Old Station). Public transportation is easily available from there, with several buses per hour and taxis, which allow a quick travel (10-15 minutes) to the city’s center and the University’s area.

You will be able to adjust your booking dates, room type, hotel category and meal plan, as well as visualise the distances to the Venue:

Participants are responsible for booking their own accommodation. Beware that Coimbra is nowadays a very requested city in Portugal during summer, so it is advisable to guarantee an early booking. Please note that the ICOE 2025 Organisation will not contact participants directly to offer hotel promotional codes or request advanced booking payments, so if you receive these sort of emails from a third party using the Organisation’s name, consider them fraudulent.
